Chapter 4 Excerpt

I watched him playing in his room and felt awed by his innocence and the complete sense of newness he found in every little thing.  He inspired the child in me and with that came my creativity.  I quickly grabbed some paper and wrote out some song lyrics that flowedphoto(1) through his spirit to my pen.

As the sun trickled through from the window above,
On the walls the light flickered and danced.
Naively he tried just to catch a small piece,
He jumped and he groped and he pranced.
His little heart raced like the wildest of winds,
Sheer excitement prevailed in his eyes.
So carefully he opened his tightly clenched fist,
And he laughed at the empty surprise.

Tiny boy for what little you know,
And the small things you don’t understand
Life for you is much richer by far,
For the simplest of things seem so grand
Let the media blast the bad news of the day
Let the grown-ups despair and despise
Just keep chasing the sun, having childish fun photo
With that glistening smile in your eyes.

On a hot summer day in his toy-filled playroom,
A fly buzzed about on the screen
Ignoring his shiny new ball and his bear,
He squealed with delight at the scene
With clumsy reactions he slapped at the bug,
Who escaped his small hands with great ease
His eyes wide with joy and his small mouth agape,
In amazement he fell to his knees

Tiny boy for what little you know,
And the small things you don’t understand
Life for you is much richer by far,
And the simplest of things seem so grand
Let the media blast the bad news of the day
Let the grown-ups despair and despisephoto(2)
Just keep chasing that fly on your innocent high,
With that glistening smile in your eyes
Just keep chasing the sun, having childish fun
With that glistening smile in your eyes

That night, the tune came as freely as the lyrics had.  I hummed it while I bathed him in the tub, one of his favorite things to do.  After shampooing his fine, brown hair, I filled up a cup with the warm bubbly bath water and poured it over his head and he laughed and splashed and filled my heart with joy.
